NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors from the post-war period.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core issue, hesitated to declare his residency plans immediately after his electoral win in November.

"The choice rested on our family's safety and the need to directing my complete efforts on enacting the agenda for affordability New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a community renowned for its vibrant immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, the community will forever remain inside me and my work," he added.

A Contentious Issue

During his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

But his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the apartment even though he hails from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a venue for official events, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his modest Astoria digs.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers see such units as essential protections as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
