UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a young woman containing several human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct personas, all possessing their own fears and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.

Based on revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy hospital, though additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a desolate church.

A World of Individual Dread

"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."

The core gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls claims that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
