The creative mastermind could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the hit sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
It would be easy to get swayed by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to force fed your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
Considering the creative staff are not listening by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“We have some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to discard a decent plan for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
