Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities released surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife just had a newborn.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive this season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
