LeBron James was aware his historic run of reaching double digits was in danger. In that crucial moment, however, it didn't concern him.
The smart move was to pass the basketball – which is exactly what he did. Consequently, the legendary streak was over.
LeBron's astounding run of 1,297 consecutive regular-season outings scoring at least ten ended on Thursday night, as the NBA's all-time scoring leader had only eight total points in the Lakers' close triumph versus the Toronto Raptors. He delivered the decisive pass, setting up teammate Rui Hachimura to knock down a triple as time expired.
“Nothing,” James replied after being questioned on the record concluding. “The team got the victory.”
He might have attempted to win the contest – and preserved his record – in the closing seconds, but he chose to make the extra pass to Rui in the left corner. Hachimura made the shot, with LeBron exulted with his hands in the air.
It's about playing basketball the proper way. Make the right play,” James explained. “That’s just been how I operate. That’s how I was instructed the game. That's what I've done throughout my career.”
“LeBron is acutely aware exactly how many points he's scored at any point,” said the team's head coach JJ Redick. “He did it like he’s done throughout his career.”
LeBron checked back into the floor for the final time at under five and a half minutes to go, the result and the streak on the line. He had six points from 3 for 15 from the field by that point.
He managed a basket with under two minutes remaining to knot the score then missed a 14-footer with 1:01 left that would have gotten him to double digits.
He didn’t take a subsequent shot – though the opportunity was there. A teammate passed him the ball in the waning seconds, however, James opted to dish it off instead.
“The basketball gods, if you do it correctly, they will reward you,” the coach concluded.
The record began over eighteen years ago. It was, by far the longest such streak the league has ever seen: MJ previously held a streak of 866 straight double-digit scoring games, Kareem recorded 787 such games, and The Mailman was fourth on the list at 575.
“He’s such an unselfish player,” noted Lakers center a fellow Laker.
“He’s just playing the game of basketball. He could have shot but given who he is on the court and his personality off the court, he chose the unselfish play, passed it to Rui and claimed the victory.”
Reaching double digits had typically been a formality early in the fourth quarter began. Throughout his run, he had achieved the 10-point mark by the start of the fourth over twelve hundred times coming into the contest.
But two of those unusual games below ten points after three periods had happened just days before: He had nine entering the final quarter versus the Mavericks last week, then had six points before the fourth quarter against Phoenix earlier in the week.
He succeeded in preserve the record against the Suns. The very next outing, it finished – yet he was celebrating regardless.
I only ever make the right play. That’s automatic, regardless of outcome,” James affirmed. “You make the right play, the game gods forever rewarding me.”
