Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has revealed that he intends to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.
"Yeah, I would be lying if I said no," the governor stated when questioned about seriously considering a campaign for president following the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."
The governor's time in office as California's leader concludes in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he cautioned that any choice is still years away.
"Fate will determine that," he added.
The California governor has emerged as a notable opponent of the current federal leadership, using his social media accounts and championing a ballot measure that would increase the party's congressional seats in following GOP gerrymandering. This action has invited attacks from critics.
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor does not care about Californians in a recent interview on Fox News. The secretary revealed plans to cut taxpayer dollars from California and suggested suspending the state's ability to issue CDLs.
"I'm about to pull a significant sum from California," Duffy said, following a recent fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented semi truck driver that caused loss of life and casualties.
The governor's team highlighted that the U.S. government had approved the driver's employment multiple times, which enabled him to secure a trucking license under national regulations.
The transportation secretary had previously stated he was withholding additional funds from the state for failing to implement English language requirements for truck drivers.
"Former D-list reality star, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand national statutes," his administration responded in a previous statement addressing Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: California CDL holders had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Data speaks for itself. The Trump administration does."
A recently conducted poll showed that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters believed that Newsom should run for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, his approval ratings has grown to an average of a third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has fallen from an average of more than 40% to 38.4%.
Some time ago, the governor remarked while traveling several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for 2028.
He mentioned his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.
"The idea that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, amazing," he stated. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that remains the key point for the U.S. citizens."
