Far-Right Former Congressman José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile's Next Leader.

After a definitive runoff election, far-right politician José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.

A Resounding Win

After more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having earlier been defeated by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.

Campaign Focused On Security and Immigration

Known for his unwavering socially conservative views and regard for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was primarily centered on promises to tackle rising crime and drastically reduce immigration.

He frequently cited migrants, especially the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the election cycle, he gave an final demand for them to depart before the inauguration or face deportation.

His proposals envisioned U.S.-style measures such as erecting holding facilities, barriers, security fences, and increasing the military presence on the northernmost border.

Amid a Regional Shift

Several observers view Kast's success as part of a larger rightward wave in Latin America, similar to this year's electoral outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

However, other analysts also frame it as a part of the predictable rotation of power between left-wing and right administrations since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.

Leading Without a Clear Mandate

Despite his clear electoral win, Kast does not hold an absolute majority in the legislature, neither in the lower house nor the Senate, even if all conservative parties are combined together.

This political reality could challenge his policy goals, such as a pledge to slash public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not offered specifics.

"We have many things about what a Kast government will look like that remain unclear because he has not detailed his methods for do them," said a political science analyst.

The professor continued, "On economic policy, it is almost certain we will see spending cuts common for the right-wing. However the area with considerably less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his central theme across the race."
