While Michel Illouz carefully navigated through the crowds beneath the Mediterranean pines and date palms at the cemetery in Ra'anana, a urban center located approximately 20 kilometers north of Tel Aviv, he expressed gratitude to countless visitors as he could.
Earlier he provided an invitation to the Israeli public to stand with his relatives in mourning his twenty-six-year-old son, Guy, whose body had been repatriated from Gaza on Monday.
Numerous people answered the call. They filled the roads, processed behind the coffin transport carrying his remains, and converged on the burial site in such significant numbers that the primary scheme to conduct the service indoors had to be abandoned.
Rather, the ceremony was held in the open air, set to the melody of singing birds.
This represented the opening memorial service since the last two dozen captives were returned from Gaza, accompanied by several deceased individuals. Another more than twenty of the dead prisoners continue to be lost, but at least this loved ones now had a particular spot to mourn and remember their son, per companions.
Guy Illouz, a musician and sound technician, had been struck from behind at the Nova music festival during the Hamas assault on October 7, 2023. Prior to the incident, he had called his father from a sheltered spot to share his affection; to bid farewell. He was captured, and per those captured simultaneously, he later died from his trauma due to medical neglect.
A close acquaintance of the Illouz relatives, Michelle, aged 50, mentioned that it had been crucial to them that people attended today. The Illouz relatives, encompassing Guy's two younger sisters and male sibling, had practiced the mourning period, the extended period of mourning, after discovering of his passing in December of the prior year. But now that Guy was at long last back with them, they required "caring community again."
"It warms my heart that you attended," expressed Michel. "Your presence is deeply appreciated."
He spoke to his son. "Beloved Guy," he said, using a term of endearment, "it's challenging for me to envision the time to come without you. They snatched you from me – they ended your life – they stole my being and robbed my persona and murdered my soul and feelings."
"I've been left hollow since that meaningless attack by those vicious attackers when they caught you and instructed you to turn around, and then just discharged two gratuitous rounds into your posterior."
"And here I am this morning, traveling to Abu Kabir medical examiner's office to confirm your identity and part ways. They took off the covering, and the initial sight I noticed was that familiar expression, that positive outlook, that peaceful presence and grace that so characterized you."
"I touched you, tried to sense your aroma, caressed every bone in your body. I looked at you, I was by myself with you, and yes, I felt with total assurance that it was you. Yes, I know, Guy-shuk, that you've returned to us. You've returned to your relatives' care, to all your companions, and to the countless people whose emotions your narrative touched."
During the beginning phase of the ceremony, Illouz had dedicated all his efforts on supporting his smaller offspring. He stroked the hair of his girls, supported his male child, kissed his neck and maintained composure for them. But then his feelings emerged.
"I will yearn for so much traveling with you through this country, experiencing your company, enjoying your artistic creations, relaxing in mountainous areas and igniting the flame to make coffee the way only you mastered – 'Father, do you see the coffee froth? You have to heat it slowly, let the bubbles form, then boil it again. Agitate the liquid with circular motions' – and then your grin while enjoying the drink and your delight in every individual sip."
"Before I left Abu Kabir today, I kept my promise. I looked at you, breathed you in one final moment, and yes, I kissed you on the front of your head. I was could perceive your attractiveness even in the condition in which you came back."
"Beloved child, I adore you completely, I cherish you. I will miss you every moment and minute of my time. Be at ease, my dear child, relax after a passage of 24 months through unexplored dimensions to us. I care for you, my Guy-shuk, my cherished eldest child."
