Everyday tennis enthusiasts are being offered an opportunity to earn A$1m when they face tennis' top professionals - featuring world number one Carlos Alcaraz - in a winner-takes-all point leading up to the year's first major

Tournament officials of the Melbourne major have unveiled the Million Dollar One Point Slam, which will pair a dozen non-professionals against 22 professionals in a elimination competition at the Australian Open venue

How the Event Will Work

Players will play 'the decision-making game' to establish who takes the serve or return position, and the competitor securing the point will advance to the following stage

The winner of the event will take home £490,000

By comparison, players who made it to the penultimate round of the primary tournaments in the 2025 Australian Open won substantial prize money

The US Open hosted a revamped, independent mixed doubles tournament in late summer which encouraged top singles players to participate, with the winners receiving a million-dollar prize

The Melbourne tournament held its inaugural quick-fire event earlier this year, but the prize fund was a smaller amount and it generated little publicity

Organizers have not detailed exactly how the event will function, but it is projected to emulate a comparable structure to the previous version

The elite players will be allowed to serve once and the everyday players twice - as is the usual procedure in traditional tennis

While it is not certain how the draw will work, there will be several competitive phases and the location will be the main stadium rather than the alternative court

Competitor Information

Local players - or foreign participants who have signed up with the national federation - can enter 'single-point competition' events at their neighborhood facilities

The winners of the local competitions will then go into a random pairing, with an everyday competitor from every geographic division picked to participate in the 'final competition' in a evening match on Wednesday, 14 January

There will also be a qualifying draw in the final month which amateurs, lower ranked pros, celebrities and sports personalities can compete in
