One of the original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed that parent company Unilever stopped the launch for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who established the company with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he will personally create this new flavor within an individual series showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking out about.

Longstanding Conflict Involving Creators and Parent Company

This latest development escalates the continuing conflict between the internationally recognized dessert company with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.

The co-founders maintain that the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".

The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol of Support

Mr. Cohen stated via an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name plus potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder stated in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”

The watermelon has emerged as a symbol of support for Palestinians because of its coloration, that closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement and Recent Changes

In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming dessert series is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which originally created several years back for endorsing former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Changes and Future Intentions

Mr. Cohen stated how he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.

This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following decades of involvement, citing worries regarding how its independence had been undermined following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.

Previously, Ben Cohen stated that "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."

"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence so that it can actualise the social mission, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
